FAST ROAD BIKE AND CAPABLE ENOUGH

이 모델의 구상은 매우 단순하다 - 빠르면서 동시에 충분히 새로운 지형에 대응할 수 있는 것이다. 로드 자전거에 디스크 브레이크가 채용되면서 드롭바 로드 자전거의 역량범위는 한없이 증가하였다. 전통적인 림 브레이크의 길이와 클리어런스에 내재된 제한이 제거되면서 더 넓은 클리어런스와 더 나은 오프로드 역량을 가진 자전거를 디자인할 수 있게되었다. 우리의 디자인의 요점은 이러한 디스크 브레이크가 가져온 장점을 이용하여 빠른 로드 자전거의 지오메트리를 유지하면서 충분한 오프로드 역량을 가지게 한다는 것이다. 

그러면 어느 정도가 충분한 역량인가? 2015년 첫번째 Serk Adventure bike를 디자인할 때 35C 타이어를 기반하였는데 그 당시 700C 구경 타이어에서 더 넓은 것은 없었고 35C는 광폭으로 여겨졌다. 그 자전거를 정말 험한 지형에서 테스트를 했으며 35C 타이어로도 다양한 모험적인 라이딩이 가능하다는 것에 놀랐다. 만약 스피드와 핸들링의 타협없이 35C의 역량을 일반 로드 자전거에 추가할 수 있다면 이것이 우리가 원하는 역량의 최적의 조합점(sweet spot)이 아닌가 생각했다. 

이러한 역량을 가지고 계속 빠른 자전거를 개발하기 위해서 우리는 충분한 클리어런스를 가지면서 액슬과 크라운 사이의 길이가 상대적으로 짧게 유지한 독자적인 특허 포크를 개발하였다. 이러한 포크는 전방을 낮고 타이트하게 유지하며 재빠른 핸들링이 가능하도록 해준다. 한편 자전거 뒷편에서는 체인스테이의 길이를 늘려 더 광폭 타이어를 채용할 수 있도록 하면서도 자전거가 느려지는 느낌이 안드는 수준으로 디자인하였다.

NEW FORK, HEADSET AND INTEGRATED HANDLEBAR

A30M의 프레임은 A30과 완전히 동일하지만 포크, 헤드셋, 핸들바는 새롭게 디자인되고 개발되었다. 포크와 헤드셋은 EXS 일체형 핸들바와 스템에 맞게 개발된 것이다.   

T47 BOTTOM BRAKCET

우리는 모든 Serk Titanium 자전거에  T47 BB를 채용하였다.  이 표준은 시장에 나온 거의 모든 표준 사이즈의 크랭크를 장착할 수 있으면서 기존 소음문제는 없앨 수 있다. T47는 나사선 방식으로 이로 인해 소음 문제가 사실상 제거될 수 있다. 또한 훨씬 쉬운 장착과 정비가 가능하다. 

SEMI INTEGRATED CABLING

우리는 인터널 케이블링의 깔끔한 외관을 좋아한다. 또한 복잡한 시스템이나 무거운 주물 부품들이 불필요하게 무게를 늘리는 것을 싫어한다. 우리는 단순한 경량의 인터널 기어 케이블링 시스템을 도입하였는데 포함된 Di2 포트들을 교체함으로써 깔끔하게 Di2 wiring이 가능하다. 유압호스는 일부만 인터널 방식을 취한 semi integrated 형식으로 깔끔한 외관을 만들어주면서도 단순한 포트 구조로 무게를 최소화할 수 있게 해준다. 

TITANIUM REAR HANGER

우리의 titanium rear hanger는 단단한 티타늄 블록으로부터 주물로 제작된 것이다. 제거가 가능하다는 의미는 향후에 보다 나은 스루엑슬 시스템이 도입되면 새로운 버전으로 발전할 수 있다는 의미이다. 

EXS COLLABORATION

중국 카본 브랜드 EXS에 협업을 요청하여 일체형 핸들바 시스템을 개발할 수 있었고 전방의 공기역학 성능을 향상시킬 수 있었다. EXS와 함께 새롭게 top cap과 compression ring을 개발하여 44mm 헤드튜브의 클래식한 외관에 걸맞는 일체형 케이블 시스템이 가능해졌다. 이 시스템은 이전 모델인 A30 모델에도 장착이 가능하게 된다.

EXS는 2018년부터 고품질의 경량 핸들바를 개발해왔으며 핸들바/스템 (90/360mm)경우 290그램에 놀라운 경량화된 제품을 선보였다. 강도(strength)에 대한 타협없이 댄싱(out of saddle)시 강직성을 최우선적으로 하는 세팅에서의 강직성과 무게 비율( stiffness to weight ratio)을 많은 시간을 투자하여 정교화하였다. 이러한 개발성과는 서로 결합된 부품의 전체 수를 줄이는 모노코크 플러스 생산 시스템을 통해 얻어질 수 있었다. 이로 강직성(rigidity)의 손실없이 더 가벼운 무게의 일체형 핸들바를 개발할 수 있었다. 

공기역학 성능은 티타늄 바이크 소유자들에게 최고 우선순위는 아니지만 현대적인 부품들과 자전거 의류로 점진적인 향상들이 더해져 상당한 차이를 실현하고 있다. EXS 일체형 핸들바 시스템은 윈드 터널에서 테스트되어 전통적ㅇ니 에어로 바/스템 결합 (예, Zipp SL70 Aero)에 비교하여 40km/h에서 4W의 파워를 절약하는 성능을 보여주었다. 이것은 40km time trial 경기에서 15초를 줄일 수 있는 성능이다. 

일체형 핸들바 시스템의 단점중 하나는 다양한 사이즈를 제공하지 않는다는 점이다. EXS에서는 80/360mm에서 140/420mm까지 30가지의 상이한 조합의 사이즈를 제공한다. 따라서 완벽한 피팅을 위한 많은 선택이 가능하며 아래 도표에서 기재된 표준 사이즈들은 재고로 보유하고 있으며 다른 사이즈들은 요청시 제조가 가능하다.

We reached out to up and coming Chinese carbon brand EXS to help us develop an integrated handlebar system. The result was a sleek finished product thats also light and aero.

DESIGN DETAILS

FAST ROAD BIKE AND CAPABLE ENOUGH

The thinking behind this bike was simple - fast AND capable enough. Since the evolution of disc brakes on road bikes the capabilities of drop bar road bikes have increased infinitely. Removing the restrictions inherent with the reach and clearance of traditional rim brakes now means we can build bikes with larger clearances and better off-road capabilities. Our design brief was to take advantage of disc brakes to keep a fast road bike geometry with just enough capability off-road. 

So what is capable enough? When we designed our first Serk Adventure bike in 2015 it was based around 35C tyres. Back then there wasn’t much else wider available in 700C and 35 was considered wide. We rode that bike in some really rough terrain and were blown away by the types of adventures that were possible with even 35C tyres. If we could add 35C capability to our regular road bike without compromising its speed and handling extensively then this was our sweet spot for capability. 

Keeping it fast. To have this capability and keep it fast we developed our own proprietary fork with just enough clearance but still retaining a relatively short (compared to most large tyre adventure bikes) axle to crown measurement. This keeps the front end low and tight and results in a fast handling bike. Out the back we lengthened the chain stays just enough to accommodate bigger tyres but not too much that the bike started to feel slow.

T47 BOTTOM BRACKET

We’ve adopted T47 across the Serk Titanium line. The standard is here to stay and allows you to fit almost all the standard sized cranks on the market creak free. T47 is threaded which virtually eliminates bottom bracket creaking. It also allows for much easier service and installation.

SEMI INTEGRATED CABLING 

We love the clean aesthetic of internal cabling. We hate complicated systems and heavy cast parts that add unnecessary weight to our bikes. We have a simple lightweight internal gear cabling system which can neatly accommodate di2 wiring by switching out the included di2 ports. The hydraulic hose is semi integrated - creating a clean look with simple port construction to minimize weight.

TITANIUM REAR HANGER

Our titanium rear hanger is cast from a solid piece of titanium block. Being removable means its possible to develop a new version in the future if a newer and better thru axle system is released in the years to come.

NEW FORK, HEADSET AND INTEGRATED HANDLEBAR

A30M has the exact same frame with A30 but its fork and headset is different for adapting to the EXS integrated handlebar and stem.  

EXS COLLABORATION

We reached out to up and coming Chinese carbon brand EXS to help us develop an integrated handlebar system and improve the front end aerodynamics of our bike system. Together with EXS we designed a new top cap and compression ring to allow for integrated cabling system that suits the classic look of the 44mm headtube found on our bikes. The system can be retro-fitted onto existing A30 bikes with a kit from Serk.

EXS have been developing high quality and lightweight handlebars since 2018. The EXS Aerover bar starts from an incredible 290g for the bar/stem combo (90mm/360mm). EXS have spent considerable time refining the stiffness to weight ratio of the setup prioritizing out of the saddle stiffness without compromising on strength. This has been achieved by using a 'monoque plus' production system which reduces the overall number of components which are bonded together. This results in lighter weights without loss of rigidity.

While aerodynamics are not typically the highest priority for titanium bike owners the marginal gains available across modern components and clothing adds up to make a significant difference.  The EXS bar has been tested in the wind tunnel and can save 4w when compared with a traditional aero bar/stem combo (eg Zipp SL70 Aero) at 40kph. This equates to 15 seconds over a 40km time trial.

One of the shortcomings of integrated handlebar systems are the lack of available sizing. EXS have addressed this with over 30 different size available - from 80/360mm all the way to 140/420mm. This gives you lots of flexibility to find the perfect set up for your fit. We stock the standard sizes as listed in the table below. Other sizes are available on request.

GEOMETRY

Geometry is optimized for 28mm tyres but the frame and fork can accomodate tyres up to 35mm putting the bike into the 'all-road' category and ready to take on adventure.
