THE PURPOSE

HOOK VS. HOOKLESS DEBATES

hooked vs hookless 논쟁은 지난 몇년 동안 휠엔지니어들사이에서 매우 중요한 이슈였다. 특히 로드 튜브리스 타이어 채택이 증가하면서 말이다. HUNT에서는 2016년 55 Carbon Wide Aero in (2016-2017)와 30/50 Carbon Aero Disc (2016-2018)라는 로드 자전거 휠셋에 H_LOCK Wedge라는 후크리스 기술을 처음으로 적용한 업체중 하나로 그러한 논쟁에 관여하고 있었다. 이러한 관여는 처음부터 로드 튜브리스의 선도자로서 자연스러운 것이였고  후크리스 림들을 개발하면서 후크 림대비 확실한 감량 (약 10-15g lighter per rim)을 확인할 수 있었고 또한 보다 단순한 제조과정으로 비용절감이 가능하였고 이것은 소비자가격 인하로 이어질 수 있다는 것을 주지하고 있었다.  그 당시 특정 타이어와 공기압에 대한 명확한 가이던스를 제시하며 판매를 하였다. 그러나 2018년 후크리스 휠들을 후크 림으로 업데이트하기로 하였는데 그 이유는 그 당시 소비자들이 보다 넓은 타이어를 사용하기 원했고 튜브리스가 아닌 경우도 많았고 후크리스를 지원하는 타이어도 매우 제한적이였기때문이다.  이러한 고객들의 의견을 반영하여 후크리스의 감량보다 타이어 선택의 다양성을 우선하기로 한 것이며 보다 넓은 타이어와 튜브리스 사용이 보다 많은 혜택을 줄 수 있었기때문이다. 낮은 공기압의 튜브리스 타이어로 전환이 준비되지 않은 소비자들을 위해 다양한 후크 림들을 제공하는 것이 중요하다고 판단하였다. 

2016년 후크리스 모델을 처음 출시한 이래 많은 중요 변화들이 있었고 지금은 많은 대형 휠셋업체들이 후크리스 휠셋들을 생산하고 있다. 새로운 ETRTO 가이드라인으로 타이어와 튜브리스 휠 제조사들간의 의견차이가 축소되었고 이로 인해 일부 소비자들이 후크리스 휠셋과 타이어 사용에 대한 보다 충분한 정보를 가지게 되었다. 후크리스 휠셋의 타이어 공기압은 72.5psi를 초과하지 않아야 하는데 많은 소비자들이 낮은 공기압이 보다 빠를 수 있다는 것을 알게되었다. 또한 풍동실험과 CFD software의 테스트 결과는 후크리스 비드가 타이어와 림의 결합 방식으로 인하여 근소하게나마 공기역학적으로 유리한 형상을 가진다는 것을 보여주었다. 위에서 언급한 대로 후크리스 림을 보다 엄격한 허용오차로 제조하는 것이 보다 생산비용이 적게들어 소비자 가격도인하할 수 있는 가능성으로 이어졌다. 이러한 점들을 감안하여 HUNT는 적극적으로 보다 많은 hookless 휠셋을 제공하고자 진행하고 있으며 특히 그래블 라이딩 또는 보다 낮은 공기압이 필요한 라이딩 형태를 위해서 적극적으로 검토중이다. 모든 것이 선택의 방향에 따라 혜택과 절충이 있게 되는데 혜택이 불이익보다 클 수 있는 최적의 밸런스가 성능에 대한 변화하는 인식들과 더불어 상이한 라이딩 원칙들에 걸쳐 존재하게 된다. 그래블의 더 낮은 공기압과 산악자전거의 더 낮은 공기압을 감안할 경우 절충해야할 부분은 점점 문제가 되지 않고 있으며 산악자전거의 경우 무게와 비용에서의 혜택이 튜브리스 타이어만을 사용해야 한다는 작은 불이익보다 크게 되면서 (이미 대부분의 산악자전거는 튜브리스 타이어를 사용하고 있지만) 상당수의 카본 산악자전거 휠셋은 후크리스 형태도 출시되고 있다.

RIMS: 단방향 T24/30 carbon fibre에 스포크 홀 주변은 3K weave로 강화한 초경량의 강한 림으로 광폭의 공기역학적 형상으로 탁월한 핸들링과 스피드를 낼 수 있다. 디스크 버전으로 나오면서 림 브레이크 버전보다 많은 감량을 이루었으며 림에 가해지는 브레이킹이 없음으로해서 강하면서도 매우 가벼운 림을 디자인할 수 있게 되었고 그로 인해 림의 본연의 역할인 타이어와 스포크로부터의 압력을 지지하는데 보다 집중할 수 있도록 디자인된 림이다.

RIM BED: Hunt의 독자적인 튜브리스레디 림 형상인 H-LOCK이 적용되어 튜브리스 타이어를 처음 장착해도 탁월한 림과의 밀착과 쉬운 밀봉이 가능하도록 해준다. H-LOCK 형상은 한번 타이어가 장착되면 더욱 확실하게 타이어 비드를 잡아주기 때문에 낮은 공기압으로 오프로드 라이딩할 때 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 

RIM SURFACE: V:Absorbe resin을 적용하여 진동을 감쇄하고 충격 저항성을 대폭 향상시켰다. Disc brake rim들은 장시간의 rim braking으로 유발될 수 있는 고열을 관리할 필요가 없기에 이러한 여력을 충분히 활용하여 카본 적층 작업에서 사용되는 V:Absorbe resin은 보다 낮은 온도의 오븐에서 구워지게 되어 보다 덜 부서지는 성격을 지니게 되어 충격 저항성을 향상시키고 진동을 보다 효과적으로 감쇄하게 해준다.

FREEHUB BODY: Hunt는 내구성을 매우 중시하기때문에 H_CERAMIK coating을 개발하여 탁월한 내구성을 확보하고 다른 일반적인 프리허브 바디에서 발견되는 카세트에 의한 damages를 방지하도록 하였다. 

BEARINGS: 휠의 심장이라고 할 수 있는 베어링은 그만큼 많은 투자를 할 가치가 있는 부품이다. Hunt는 일본 EZO가 제작한 고급 정밀 smooth-rolling sealed cartridge bearings을 사용한다.

SPOKES: 최고급 라인인 Pillar Spoke Re-enforcement PSR XTRA model을 사용한다. 이 butted blade aero spokes는 더 가볍고 텐션을 유지하고 피로도 저항성을 향상시킬 수 있도록 더 높은 탄성을 제공한다. 이 PSR J-bend spokes는 높은 스트레스가 가해지는 spoke head 부위의 지름을 2.2mm로 하여 강성을 높였으며 사각 헤드를 가진 nipples을 적용하여 보다 정밀한 텐션 조정이 가능하도록 하였다.

THE PURPOSE

Introducing the Carbon Gravel X-Wide Hookless: Carry speed over the seriously rough stuff with confidence on these super-wide rims optimised for wide tires. The 35mm depth was selected for stiffness and burly strength, knowing that you’ll likely be spending plenty of miles off-road. Featuring the same 5 degree RapidEngage 6-pawl hub as our 30 Carbon Gravel Disc (inclusive of H_CERAMIK freehub) this wheelset offers riders a more burly option for hardcore gravel/drop-bar off-road riding and racing! Benefitting further from a 28-spoke count both front and rear (for up to 120kg riders), the result is a strong gravel/bike-packing wheelset for the heaviest of duties!

HOOK VS. HOOKLESS DEBATES

The hooked vs hookless debate has been important in wheel engineering for the last few years, particularly with the increased adoption of road tubeless. At HUNT, we’ve had an interesting relationship with this debate as we were one of the first companies to offer a road wheelset using our hookless (then called H_LOCK Wedge) technology back in 2016, with our 55 Carbon Wide Aero in (2016-2017) and 30/50 Carbon Aero Disc (2016-2018). We felt it was a natural step for the company to make, already being a huge advocate for road tubeless since our inception.From our development of hookless rims, we saw clear weight savings (about 10-15g lighter per rim) for the same profile and dimensions, when compared to hooked. There's also a cost reduction owing to a simpler manufacturing process, which we passed on to the rider. We provided clear guidance that they were to be used with certain tires and at certain pre-tested pressures. Ultimately in 2018, we opted to update those wheels to hooked rims because, especially at that time, customers wanted to run a wide range of tires, often not tubeless. Hookless compatible tires were limited. Feedback from customers at the time prioritised tyre selection over the rim weight advantages of hookless. At our core, we are all riders and although we know wider tires and tubeless can provide many benefits, we will always represent the needs of the wider cycling community. For riders not ready to make the switch to low-pressure tubeless, we felt it was important to offer them the versatility of hooked rims.

There have been significant changes within the industry since we first came out with our own hookless models in 2016, with the largest manufacturers in the industry now making hookless wheels. With the newly announced ETRTO guidelines, the variances between tyre and wheel manufacturers (“tubeless standards”) have reduced, resulting in more informed acceptance by some riders running hookless on the road.Tire pressures on hookless wheels should not exceed 72.5psi, and many riders are starting to see that lower pressures help them to ride faster. Further, our work in the wind tunnel and using CFD software has indicated to us that a hookless bead may achieve a slightly more aerodynamic shape because of the way the tyre interacts with the rim. As mentioned above, it is also less costly to manufacture hookless rims to tight tolerances, which is beneficial for the rider if that reduction in cost is passed onto them. With this in mind, we are actively looking at offering more hookless options/variants of our wheels, particularly for gravel riding or forms of riding where lower tyre pressures are considered the norm.As with anything, there are benefits and compromises in either direction. It is a fine balance of where the benefits will outweigh any penalties, across different riding disciplines with ever-shifting perceptions on performance. With the lower pressures of gravel, and even lower pressure of MTB, the compromises gradually become less of an issue. The benefits (weight and cost) in MTB generally outweigh any small negatives such as having to use only tubeless tyres (as almost every MTBer does anyway) meaning the vast majority of carbon MTB wheels are hookless.

RIMS: A strong and super-lightweight hookless rim featuring unidirectional T24/30 carbon fibre with 3K weave re-enforced spoke holes. The wide aero profile delivers excellent handling and speed. The evolution of disc-specific construction has allowed massive weight savings over equivalent rim-brake rims. The removal of braking forces on the rim allows a strong but very light rim to be designed that can focus on it's primary roles of supporting the tyre and spoke forces.

RIM BED: H-LOCK is our tubeless-ready rim bed profile with up-kicks to the shoulders of the tubeless steps which help to create a great rim-well seal for first installation and easy sealing of tubeless tires. The H-LOCK profile also locks the beads in place more securely once seated. This is especially important when running lower pressures off road.

RIM SURFACE: V:Absorbe resin reduces vibration and massively improves impact resistance. Disc brake rims are obviously not required to handle the high temperatures induced by prolonged rim braking. We have made the most of this and used our new V:Absorbe resin blends in the carbon layering which cures at a lower temperature. Lower temperature resins are less brittle meaning they have greater resistance to impacts and dampen vibration more effectively.

FREEHUB BODY: Durability is a theme for HUNT as time and money you spend fixing is time and money you cannot spend riding or upgrading your bikes. As a result, we've developed the H_CERAMIK coating to provide excellent durability and protect against cassette sprocket damage often seen on standard alloy freehub bodies.

BEARINGS: The heart of any wheel. Investing in them makes huge sense. We use high-grade precision smooth-rolling sealed cartridge bearings by EZO Japan.

SPOKES: We chose the top-of-the-range Pillar Spoke Re-enforcement PSR XTRA models. These butted blade aero spokes are lighter and provide a greater degree of elasticity to maintain tensions and add fatigue resistance. These PSR J-bend spokes feature the 2.2 width at the spoke head providing more material in this high stress area. The nipples come with a square head so you can achieve precise tensioning. Combining these components well is key which is why all Hunt wheels are hand-built.

HOOKLESS TECHNOLOGY: Hookless rims are manufactured without bead hooks, the inward protruding edges at the top of the rim bed that help to retain clincher tires under pressure. The internal rim walls of a hookless rim are flat and straight
