AERODYNAMIC ALLOY WHEELS?!

지금까지 공기 역학 기술은 알루미늄 휠셋에 적용되는 것이 늦었던 것이 사실이다. 하지만 HUNT는 기존의 그러한 현상에 과감히 도전장을 내밀고 많은 시간과 투자를 34 Aero Wide Disc Wheelset 개발에 투여하여 28mm 타이어 장착 경우 Zipp 202 NSW (carbon)보다 빠른 윈드터널 테스트 결과를  얻어냈다. 이제 더이상 알루미늄 휠셋이 카본 휠셋보다 느리다는 생각은 사실이 아니게 되었다. 

WIDER TIRES & WIDER WHEELS | RIDE FASTER 

논쟁할 수 없는 공기 역학적 성능으로 rim-brake wheels은 과거 23mm가 주류를 이루었던 시기를 지나 현재는 27-28mm 광폭으로 이전해가고 있다. 하지만 rim brake calipers로 인한 공기 역학 성능 제한과 아직도 23mm 타이어 장착을 기본으로 rim-brake wheels이 출시되는 상황이다. 그러나, 이미 프로 선수들을 포함하여 일반 라이더들도 25mm, 28mm 또는 심지어 30mm 타이어를 적극적으로 선택하는 움직임이 더욱 두드러지고 있다. 광폭 타이어 장착으로 인하여 얻는 향상되는 그립감, 승차감, 그리고 공기역학적 성능이 더 많은 라이더들의 선택을 유인할 것이라고 판단하여 Hunt는 road disc aero wheels은 광폭 타이어 장착을 염두해두고 디자인되는 것이 당연하다고 판단하였다. Hunt 34 Aero Wide Disc Wheelsets은 Schwalbe engineers들과의 협업을 통해 디자인되었고 자전거 단독 실험뿐 아니라 실제 라이딩 실험 세팅에서 얻어진 자료를 기반으로 개발되었다. 

INDUSTRY-LEADING AERO KNOWLEDGE

2017년 HUNT에 합류한 Luisa Grappone (MSc Aerospace Engineering)은 wind tunnel 테스트와 aerodynamic wheels 개발을 10년 간 해온 경험을 바탕으로 (with World Tour pros from BMC Racing, Team Movistar & Cervelo Test Team) 새로운 HUNT의 세계적인 수준의 공기역학 성능을 지닌 신규 디스크 휠셋 개발을 Peter (Co-Founder & Materials Scientist)와 Tom (Co-Founder & Product Manager) and 다른 팀원들과 함께 주도하고 있다. 그 결과로 HUNT 34 Aero Wide Disc Wheelset은 다양한 세계적인 수준의 휠셋 제품과 윈드 터널 비교 테스트 결과 25mm 타이어 장착 경우는 Zipp 202 NSW (carbon)에 이어 두번째로, 28mm 타이어 장착 경우에는 Zipp 202 NSW 보다 빠른 공기 역학 성능을 보여주는 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.

• THE WORLD'S FASTEST ALLOY DISC-BRAKE WHEELSET - Luisa Grappone의 수년간의 마지막 순간까지 치밀한 윈드 터널 테스트들을 거친 휠셋으로 이 급의 휠셋에서는 세계 최고로 빠른 휠셋을 개발하기 위해서 모든 사항들을 처음부터 다시 재고하면서 연구하였고 28mm 타티어를 장착하는 경우 이 급에서 가장 우수한 Zipp 202 NSW 카본 휠셋보다 빠른 테스트 결과를 얻었다. 
• REAL WORLD TESTED - 실험실 테스트뿐 아니라 실제 라이딩을 통해 최대한 많은 시간동안 본 휠셋을 테스트하면서 라이더들이 가장 원하는 휠셋을 개발하고자 하였다. 
• RIMS - 넓은 폭의 림 형상과 큰 반경의 spoke bed profile은 Hunt의 차세대 Aerodynamic이 적용되는 LIMITLESS project를 위해서 개발한 것으로 타이어에서 림을 거쳐 스포크 주변까지 공기 흐름의 전이가 훨씬 잘 이루어지도록 하여 넓은 yaw angles에서 낮은 수준의 aerodynamic drag를 실현해준다. 넓은 림 형상을 확보하기 위하고 1,548g의 경량의 고성능 휠셋을 개발하기 위해서 일반적으로 고성능 알루미늄 휠에 사용되는 6061-T6 alloy (280 MPa) 대신 6069-T6 alloy를 (69% higher Ultimate Tensile Strength (480 Mega Pascals)) 사용하였다. 
• RIM BED - H-Lock은 Hunt의 tubeless-ready rim bed profile로 처음 장착에서도 확실한 밀봉과 손쉬운 튜브리스 타이어 장착이 가능하도록 도와주는 디자인이다. H-Lock profile은 또한 한번 장착되면 보다 확실하게 타이어 비드가 림에 자리매김을 하도록 해주며 이 특징은 낮은 공기압에서 오프로드를 달릴 경우 더욱 중요한 부분이다. 
• BEARINGS - 베어링은 휠의 심장과도 같기에 더욱 많은 노력을 기울이는 것이 당연하다. Hunt는 high-grade precision smooth-rolling sealed cartridge bearings을 사용하며 본 휠셋의 3개의 리어 허브 베어링은 low-friction LU/LB seals을 내부 베어링 면에 적용하여 노출면의 탁월한 실링을 유지할 뿐 아니라 구름 저항도 낮게 유지할 수 있다. 
• FREEHUB BODY - 각 3개의 이빨을 가진 3개의 multi-point pawls과 48t ratchet ring으로 구성되어 있어 7.5도의 인상적으로 낮은 체결 각도를 가진다. HUNT의 모든 freehub body는 Steel Spline이 삽입된 형태로 강화되어 일반적으로 관찰되는 cassette sprocket으로 인한 손상을 최소화하는 탁월한 내구성을 지닙니다. 
• NIPPLES - HUNT는 공기 역학적 성능을 최대화하는 디자인을 가지면서 동시에 정비 용이성과 사용성 또한 핵심적인 사항으로 염두해두고 개발하고 있다. 외부 노출형 spoke nipples은 이러한 측면에서 탁월한 선택이다. 특히, 튜브리스 타이어를 사용할 경우 nipples을 접근하기 위해서는 tubeless tape을 반드시 제거해야 하는 상황을 막을 수 있기 때문이다. 
• WING SPOKES - 다른 경쟁사의 스포크뿐 아니라 다양한 형태의 스포크 종류를 실험 비교한 결과 aerofoil profile of Pillar's Wing 20 spokes가 공기 역학적 측면에서 flat/bladed spokes보다 우수하다는 점을 발견하여 적용하고 있다.
• ADAPTABILITY - HUNT disc wheels은 향후 변화될 사양에 대해 대응이 가능하도록 (future-proof) 심혈을 기울여 디자인된다. 따라서 현존하는 어떠한 형태의 axle standard를 지원한다. 다만, Hunt 34 Aero Wide Disc Wheelset의 경우 과거 형태인 15mm front road TA standard는 지원하지 않는다. 이는 앞바퀴 허브와 베어링의 충분한 내구성을 확보하기 위해서 15mm front road TA 적용이 바람직하지 않다고 판단했고 전체적인 로드 디스크와 로드 그래블 바이크가 12mm front road TA standard 채용을 늘리고 있는 시장상황을 감안한 결정이다. Shimano hydraulic brakes가 보다 많은 자전거에서 채택되면서 centre-lock hubs를 기본으로 6 bolt adaptors를 기본으로 제공하여 모든 방식에 대응할 수 있도록 하였다.
• TYRES - 튜브리스 타이어의 펑크 저항성과 향상된 그립감과 승차감에 대해 더 많은 라이더들이 그 혜택을 누릴 수 있도록 하기 위해서 HUNT의 모든 wheels은 tubeless-ready wheels로 디자인되어 튜브리스 타이어뿐만 아니라 클린처 타이어와 튜브 장착도 가능하다.

• Hubs | Sprint SL straight-pull hubs로 15mm 지름의 6066-T6 body와 axle 적용으로 무게 대비 탁월한 강성을 가진다. Steel spline insert로 카세트로부터 프리허브 바디 보호하며 빠른 체결속도를 보여주는 7.5° Sprint Disc hubs.
• Spokes | Pillar Wing 20 spokes with aerofoil profile. Pillar 또는 다른 회사이 flat or bladed spokes보다 더 나은 공기 역학 성능을 보여줌.

ALLOY? IN A WIND TUNNEL?

Until now, aerodynamic development has lagged behind on alloy wheelsets. So much so, that after having invested our time and knowledge into the 34 Aero Wide Disc, it is faster than a (carbon) Zipp 202 NSW when paired with a 28c tire. The assumption that carbon is inherently faster is untrue, and now tangible aerodynamic performance has been made accessible for all.

WIDER TIRES & WIDER WHEELS | RIDE FASTER  Leading rim-brake wheels have been at the 27-28mm wide mark for some time, with undisputed aero benefits over narrower designs. However, they are aerodynamically limited by rim brake calipers limiting the maximum width of the brake track. Further, most are optimised for narrower tires. 23mm tires used to be the standard… but for us, you and most pro riders, 25/28 and even 30mm tires are the preferred choice. Let’s face it: when leaning in on the final turn of a mass bunch sprint or descending sweeping alpine bends, you want serious grip! Plus, the lower rolling resistance benefits of 25 and 28mm tires* mean that road disc aero wheels should be specifically designed around these wider tires. Accordingly, this wheelset has been designed using schematics and feedback from Schwalbe's own engineers. (*Especially rider-system benefits, wheel & tire only tests do not include rider damped losses, and how lower pressures reduce these losses by reducing rider movement. This is a whole other area we will be releasing scientific data on.)

INDUSTRY-LEADING AERO KNOWLEDGE We were ecstatic when Luisa Grappone (MSc Aerospace Engineering) approached us in 2017 about joining HUNT. Luisa’s experience in wind tunnel testing and developing wheels for 10 years (with World Tour pros from BMC Racing, Team Movistar & Cervelo Test Team) showed her industry-leading experience. So of course we welcomed Luisa to join us as HUNT Product Engineering Manager in August 2017. Using Luisa as our Engineering lead, Peter (Co-Founder & Materials Scientist), Tom (Co-Founder & Product Manager) and the whole team here set to work immediately to develop you the fastest ‘unlimited’ road disc-brake wheelset in the world!

THE RESULTS… The wind tunnel data we recorded is shown against the full range of incumbent world-class aero wheels in the charts below. The results speak for themselves. It was amazing to see Luisa’s face when it became evident what we'd achieved for riders. It’s been hard work but it’s been very worthwhile. THE WORLD'S FASTEST ALLOY DISC-BRAKE WHEELSET

Developed by Luisa Grappone, with years in the wind tunnel spent testing every last detail. We've left no stone unturned in designing this wheelset from the ground up to be very fastest in the world within its class. Wind tunnel tested and proven to be even faster than a (carbon) Zipp 202 NSW when paired with 28c tires.

REAL WORLD TESTED - We test our wheels when riding to work, racing, and spending as much time as we possibly can on our bikes. We develop the wheels we want to ride the most as cyclists ourselves.

RIMS - The broad shape and large radius spoke bed profile (developed by Luisa for the LIMITLESS project allows excellent transfer of airflow from tyre to the rim and then around the spoke bed to ensure low aerodynamic drag at a wide range of yaw angles.

To achieve the wide profile, yet also create a lightweight 1548g high performance wheelset, 6069-T6 alloy was the right choice. It has a 69% higher Ultimate Tensile Strength (480 Mega Pascals), than the 6061-T6 alloy (280 MPa) often used in performance road rims.

RIM BED - H-Lock is our tubeless-ready rim bed profile with up-kicks to the shoulders of the tubeless steps which help to create a great rim-well seal for first installation and easy sealing of tubeless tyres. The H-Lock profile also locks the beads in place more securely once seated. This is especially important when running lower pressures off road.

BEARINGS - The heart of any wheel. Investing in them makes huge sense. We use high-grade precision smooth-rolling sealed cartridge bearings. This wheelset has three of the rear hub bearings upgraded to low-friction LU/LB seals on the internal bearing face to further reduce rolling resistance whilst maintaining excellent sealing on the exposed faces.

FREEHUB BODY - Featuring 3 multi-point pawls with 3 teeth each and a 48t ratchet ring. The result an impressively low 7.5 deg engagement angle. Durability is a theme for HUNT, and so all our freehub bodies have Steel Spline Insert re-enforcements to provide excellent durability against cassette sprocket damage often seen on standard alloy freehub bodies.

NIPPLES - Despite designing a wheelset with aerodynamic supremacy in mind, serviceability and usability has always been a core philosophy of how we put wheels together. External spoke nipples are absolutely the right choice with this in mind, especially when running tubeless tyres as you would have to remove the tubeless tape to access the nipples were they to be internal

WING SPOKES - After considerable testing across multiple spoke types (including analysis against competitor spokes), we found that the aerofoil profile of Pillar's Wing 20 spokes offer even further aerodynamic advantages over flat/bladed options.

ADAPTABILITY - Our wheels are seriously future-proof. We can adapt your wheels to any current axle standard, you just need to let us know what you require by filling in the simple form on the confirmation page after checkout. Please note these wheels will not work with the older 15mm front road TA standard.. As Shimano hydraulic brakes are appearing on many new bikes, we wanted riders to have the option so we went even more adaptable with centre-lock hubs and 6 bolt adaptors included.

TYRES - At HUNT, we enjoy the puncture resistance and grip benefits of tubeless on our every-day rides so we wanted to allow our customers the same option. Of course, all of our tubeless-ready wheels are designed to work perfectly with clincher tyres and inner tubes too.
