AERODYNAMIC ALLOY WHEELS?!
지금까지 공기 역학 기술은 알루미늄 휠셋에 적용되는 것이 늦었던 것이 사실이다. 하지만 HUNT는 기존의 그러한 현상에 과감히 도전장을 내밀고 많은 시간과 투자를 34 Aero Wide Disc Wheelset 개발에 투여하여 28mm 타이어 장착 경우 Zipp 202 NSW (carbon)보다 빠른 윈드터널 테스트 결과를 얻어냈다. 이제 더이상 알루미늄 휠셋이 카본 휠셋보다 느리다는 생각은 사실이 아니게 되었다.
WIDER TIRES & WIDER WHEELS | RIDE FASTER
논쟁할 수 없는 공기 역학적 성능으로 rim-brake wheels은 과거 23mm가 주류를 이루었던 시기를 지나 현재는 27-28mm 광폭으로 이전해가고 있다. 하지만 rim brake calipers로 인한 공기 역학 성능 제한과 아직도 23mm 타이어 장착을 기본으로 rim-brake wheels이 출시되는 상황이다. 그러나, 이미 프로 선수들을 포함하여 일반 라이더들도 25mm, 28mm 또는 심지어 30mm 타이어를 적극적으로 선택하는 움직임이 더욱 두드러지고 있다. 광폭 타이어 장착으로 인하여 얻는 향상되는 그립감, 승차감, 그리고 공기역학적 성능이 더 많은 라이더들의 선택을 유인할 것이라고 판단하여 Hunt는 road disc aero wheels은 광폭 타이어 장착을 염두해두고 디자인되는 것이 당연하다고 판단하였다. Hunt 34 Aero Wide Disc Wheelsets은 Schwalbe engineers들과의 협업을 통해 디자인되었고 자전거 단독 실험뿐 아니라 실제 라이딩 실험 세팅에서 얻어진 자료를 기반으로 개발되었다.

ALLOY? IN A WIND TUNNEL?
Until now, aerodynamic development has lagged behind on alloy wheelsets. So much so, that after having invested our time and knowledge into the 34 Aero Wide Disc, it is faster than a (carbon) Zipp 202 NSW when paired with a 28c tire. The assumption that carbon is inherently faster is untrue, and now tangible aerodynamic performance has been made accessible for all.
WIDER TIRES & WIDER WHEELS | RIDE FASTER Leading rim-brake wheels have been at the 27-28mm wide mark for some time, with undisputed aero benefits over narrower designs. However, they are aerodynamically limited by rim brake calipers limiting the maximum width of the brake track. Further, most are optimised for narrower tires. 23mm tires used to be the standard… but for us, you and most pro riders, 25/28 and even 30mm tires are the preferred choice. Let’s face it: when leaning in on the final turn of a mass bunch sprint or descending sweeping alpine bends, you want serious grip! Plus, the lower rolling resistance benefits of 25 and 28mm tires* mean that road disc aero wheels should be specifically designed around these wider tires. Accordingly, this wheelset has been designed using schematics and feedback from Schwalbe's own engineers. (*Especially rider-system benefits, wheel & tire only tests do not include rider damped losses, and how lower pressures reduce these losses by reducing rider movement. This is a whole other area we will be releasing scientific data on.)
INDUSTRY-LEADING AERO KNOWLEDGE We were ecstatic when Luisa Grappone (MSc Aerospace Engineering) approached us in 2017 about joining HUNT. Luisa’s experience in wind tunnel testing and developing wheels for 10 years (with World Tour pros from BMC Racing, Team Movistar & Cervelo Test Team) showed her industry-leading experience. So of course we welcomed Luisa to join us as HUNT Product Engineering Manager in August 2017. Using Luisa as our Engineering lead, Peter (Co-Founder & Materials Scientist), Tom (Co-Founder & Product Manager) and the whole team here set to work immediately to develop you the fastest ‘unlimited’ road disc-brake wheelset in the world!
THE RESULTS… The wind tunnel data we recorded is shown against the full range of incumbent world-class aero wheels in the charts below. The results speak for themselves. It was amazing to see Luisa’s face when it became evident what we'd achieved for riders. It’s been hard work but it’s been very worthwhile. This process and the knowledge gained from pushing the boundaries of aero wheel development creates huge opportunities to serve you with a wide range of world leading aerodynamic wheels…this is just the beginning! THE WORLD'S FASTEST ALLOY DISC-BRAKE WHEELSET
Developed by Luisa Grappone, with years in the wind tunnel spent testing every last detail. We've left no stone unturned in designing this wheelset from the ground up to be very fastest in the world within its class. Wind tunnel tested and proven to be even faster than a (carbon) Zipp 202 NSW when paired with 28c tires.
REAL WORLD TESTED - We test our wheels when riding to work, racing, and spending as much time as we possibly can on our bikes. We develop the wheels we want to ride the most as cyclists ourselves.
RIMS - The broad shape and large radius spoke bed profile (developed by Luisa for the LIMITLESS project allows excellent transfer of airflow from tyre to the rim and then around the spoke bed to ensure low aerodynamic drag at a wide range of yaw angles.
To achieve the wide profile, yet also create a lightweight 1548g high performance wheelset, 6069-T6 alloy was the right choice. It has a 69% higher Ultimate Tensile Strength (480 Mega Pascals), than the 6061-T6 alloy (280 MPa) often used in performance road rims.
RIM BED - H-Lock is our tubeless-ready rim bed profile with up-kicks to the shoulders of the tubeless steps which help to create a great rim-well seal for first installation and easy sealing of tubeless tyres. The H-Lock profile also locks the beads in place more securely once seated. This is especially important when running lower pressures off road.
BEARINGS - The heart of any wheel. Investing in them makes huge sense. We use high-grade precision smooth-rolling sealed cartridge bearings. This wheelset has three of the rear hub bearings upgraded to low-friction LU/LB seals on the internal bearing face to further reduce rolling resistance whilst maintaining excellent sealing on the exposed faces.
FREEHUB BODY - Featuring 3 multi-point pawls with 3 teeth each and a 48t ratchet ring. The result an impressively low 7.5 deg engagement angle. Durability is a theme for HUNT, and so all our freehub bodies have Steel Spline Insert re-enforcements to provide excellent durability against cassette sprocket damage often seen on standard alloy freehub bodies.
NIPPLES - Despite designing a wheelset with aerodynamic supremacy in mind, serviceability and usability has always been a core philosophy of how we put wheels together. External spoke nipples are absolutely the right choice with this in mind, especially when running tubeless tyres as you would have to remove the tubeless tape to access the nipples were they to be internal
WING SPOKES - After considerable testing across multiple spoke types (including analysis against competitor spokes), we found that the aerofoil profile of Pillar's Wing 20 spokes offer even further aerodynamic advantages over flat/bladed options.
ADAPTABILITY - Our wheels are seriously future-proof. We can adapt your wheels to any current axle standard, you just need to let us know what you require by filling in the simple form on the confirmation page after checkout. Please note these wheels will not work with the older 15mm front road TA standard.. As Shimano hydraulic brakes are appearing on many new bikes, we wanted riders to have the option so we went even more adaptable with centre-lock hubs and 6 bolt adaptors included.
TYRES - At HUNT, we enjoy the puncture resistance and grip benefits of tubeless on our every-day rides so we wanted to allow our customers the same option. Of course, all of our tubeless-ready wheels are designed to work perfectly with clincher tyres and inner tubes too.
